The provinces under Shivaji's rule were styled Swarajya to distinguish them from Mughlai or provinces under other (generally Muhammadan) rulers. The Swarajya was, for revenue purposes, divided into a number of Prants consisting of two or more Districts. There were in all 16 provinces under Shivaji's government according to Ranade.²⁷ They were:
