The Brāhmaṇas are still more clearly the work of a relatively narrow circle. They show the strivings of a scholastic mysticism thrown on its own resources and wrestling not so much with hereditary teaching as with its own speculations. But however that may be, there is one point at least which seems to me to authorize conjectures based on firmer ground.
