The idea of private or individual property in such a family would not be very strong. Just as the co-parceners held landed property and general village resources in common so also for the exploitation of these resources they came to hold the labour power in common. The labouring or servile population of every village was called śūdra, over whom the three upper varṇas exercised general social control. Thus we have the clear beginnings of a society based on śūdra labour.
