Singing, presumably for the entertainment of the people, seems to have been an important occupation of the ḍombas.⁸ They lived on singing and selling winnowing baskets and similar articles.⁹ The Amarakosa includes caṇḍālikā, a kind of vulgar lute, in the śudra-varga,¹⁰ which may suggest that the caṇḍālas also had some share in providing popular entertainment.
