In the case of the Purāṇas, however, the *Bhaviṣyat Purāṇa* states that they should never be studied by the śūdras, but should be heard by them.¹ Possibly the religious practice of narrating stories from the Purāṇas and epics to all sections of the people for their edification and salvation originated in the Gupta period.
