Serious disputes of this kind, on a local or even on a national scale, are not unknown in the Indian sub-continent today. It is said that after the Buddha concluded peace between them, the Koliyas and the Sakyas gave 250 of their princes each to the Buddhist *saṅgha*.¹ We have no other account which reflects on the relations of the Koliyas with the Sakyas,² the other republics of the neighbourhood, or the Kosalan kingdom.
