⁵ Normally *pipphali* means pepper. This, however, does not fit the context, and moreover pepper vines do not grow in the Himālayan foothills. Probably we are to take the term as equivalent to *pipphala*, the fruit of the *ficus religiosa* or *pīpal* tree; also *cp. MPS*, Skt., pp. 448-50.
