Recently, Professor C. V. R. Rao published an article on the "Ancient Indian Republics,"¹⁰ in which he mainly summarizes the research of earlier scholars but shows none of the weaknesses of those who wrote in the wave of enthusiastic nationalism. Professor Rao does not make any original point and believes in Jayaswal's dictum that the republics "definitely came into existence in the post-Vedic period."
