The laterite plantation surfaces (100 to 10 m above sea level) observed along the coasts of Maharashtra and Tamil Nadu indicate changes in Quaternary land-sea relationships [9.10]. The geochemistry of laterite-like formations overlying non-lateritized tool-bearing gravels at VADAMADURAI near Madras has disproved the evidence for a Lower Palaeolithic occupation of the site during the Early or pre-Pleistocene periods.
