The BILLASURGAM caves formed in the limestones in Dt Kurnool contain a deposit yielding Upper Pleistocene fauna. Similar fauna and Upper Palaeolithic [4.4] tools have been found in some other caves, viz. Muchchhatta CHINTAMANIGAVI VAGU in the same area. Stray finds of fossils dating to the Middle Pleistocene have been reported from Ariyalur (*Equus namadicus*) and to the late Pleistocene from Tirunelveli (*Elephas hysudricus*) in Tamil Nadu.
