Recently doubts have been raised about the fourfold division of the Quaternary glaciation in the sub-Himalayan region. In the Swat valley in Pakistan which falls in the same physiographic zone, three glaciations have been traced originating at altitudes of 3660 m or more and terminating at altitudes as low as 1770 m. Later work in the LIDDAR valley (Sankalia, 1974) has established the lowest glacial limit at 2140 m during the Quaternary, its remnants being preserved in the form of glaciofluvial deposits at PAHLGAM (Pahlgam formations). Lower Palaeolithic tools are found in association with this deposit [4.2].
