In the post-Mauryan period UJJAIN has proved to be a significant site as it has given evidence of a furnace used for bead-making. On the floor of a house dated by the excavator to post-200 B.C. have been found a large number of unfinished beads of agate and chalcedony along with a pot full of such beads associated with sandstone grinding slabs marked by deep and long grooves and several long and deep channelled furnaces. The latter were obviously used for heating beads. Except this solitary evidence there is no other evidence in the early historical period.
