At NAGDA it occurred in the lower levels of Pd II, *c.* 750-500 B.C. and continued throughout in Pd III, *c.* 500-200 B.C. The principal shapes in this wheel-made medium-to-coarse ware are the basin and the jar but the appearance of this granulated feature is particularly noticeable in the carinated jar. This distinctive feature may have arisen out of the practical need for the frequent handling of the jar, and the rough surface provided by the flakes or grains offered an easy grip. It was treated sometimes with a slip but often with a thin wash.
