The mud *stūpa* at VAIŚĀLĪ has been identified by A.S. Altekar, the excavator, with the one raised by the Licchavis over the relics of Buddha, on account of the primitive feature of the *stūpa*, the location of which has been thought to correspond to Hiuen Tsang's location of the *stūpa* of the Licchavis. However the identification is not beyond dispute. This *stūpa* yielded a small soapstone casket containing a small quantity of ashy earth, a piece of gold leaf, two glass beads, a small conch and a copper punch-marked coin [3.1]. The reliquary together with the knobbed lid presents a globular profile (*IAR 1957-8*, p. 11; *1958-9*, p. 5).
