What is the explanation for this phenomenon? One reason almost certain is the introduction and adoption of the new technology of microlithic tools and the bow and arrow. This new technology proved itself to be so superior to the flake and blade tool technology of the Palaeolithic that within a short span of a few thousand years it was diffused over the entire subcontinent and completely supplanted the older technology. Adoption of the bow and arrow as a hunting tool must have greatly improved the efficiency in hunting and thereby increased food supply. Another reason was the amelioration in climate for which there is positive evidence at least in w. India [9.2.]. A third factor seems to be the increased, if not altogether new, emphasis on the exploitation of aquatic food resources for which there is evidence from BAGOR, BHIMBETKA and SARAI NAHAR RAI. Finally the evidence from BAGOR and ADAMGARH shows that the settlers had already taken to animal husbandry which would not only increase food supply but would make it more stable and assured.
