The importance of the study of settlements as a unit has been realized in archaeology only in comparatively recent years. But this has already set a distinct research trend. However, in the Indian context studies of this kind are as yet rare, if not virtually non-existent. This is a point which must be realized in any general study on ancient Indian settlements.
