Middle Palaeolithic factory and possibly occupation sites are far more commonly known from places away from river banks. At Choli and Dongargaon near MAHESHWAR in Dt E. Nimar and at SOJAT in Dt Pali for example, there are many rich sites on outcrops of chert-bearing rocks. Possibly the extensive aggradation of river valleys in post-Acheulian times led to a loss of the sources of the supply of pebbles for tool-making and the people had to look for alternative sources. Though mainly such sites are workshop sites, man must have lived on them even though temporarily. Besides the Middle Palaeolithic man also continued to live along stream banks and in caves and rock shelters, as at BHIMBETKA.
