In Gujarat and w. Rajasthan conditions became considerably arid toward the end of the Lower Palaeolithic period. Extensive and thick sand-dunes were formed over the alluvial plain [9.2]. Later there was a reversion to a better climate. This is testified by the presence of extensive gravel formations in the Luni and its tributaries and by a deeply weathered soil in the dunes at Buddha Pushkar near Ajmer. The Middle Palaeolithic man appeared at this time. His tools are found both in alluvial gravels and on the weathered soil surface.
