Satsangi and Dutta, 1968, opine that the faunal assemblage is comparable with those of the Yamuna and the Ganga which was assigned by Falconer, 1865, and Pilgrim, 1905, respectively to some horizon of the Pleistocene, slightly younger than the Narmada alluvial deposits. Chakravarty, 1931, assigned a Middle Pleistocene age to the Narmada beds and an Upper Pleistocene age to the Ganga alluvium, thus agreeing with the views of Pilgrim, 1925. Dassarma (in press) also suggests that the faunal assemblages of the older alluvial deposits of the Ganga, Yamuna and the Son valleys are comparable to the Upper Narmada Group, characterized by the occurrence of *Bos namadicus*, *Palaeoloxodon* and *Tetraprotodon*. This assemblage favours an Upper Pleistocene dating.
