Though even 1% of As increases the hardness of copper from 124 to 177 (Brinell hardness nos.), still only 8% artefacts are alloyed wth arsenic. Arsenic may have been used only as a deoxidizer for closed castings. Three examples from SURKOTADA have more than 13% lead. The metal forging techniques of ‘sinking’, ‘raising’, ‘running’, cold work, annealing, riveting, lapping, etc., are evidenced in various tools and pots.
