v1.c21.s9.t1.15
Metallurgical studies of silver punch-marked coins reveal that despite primitive techniques by 600 B.C. Indians could obtain silver of high purity (0·1 to 0·5% lead was the main impurity). It indicates that cupellation was carried out with great perfection. Alloying of silver with copper was deliberate and in correct proportion, giving ease in casting, providing optimum strength and wear resistance. It also economized the metal.
