*16.9.4 Slag*. Slag is the refuse material left after the smelting of metallic ores and comprises fused earthy matter. On account of its easy fusibility and low density it is conveniently removed during smelting, the separation being facilitated by the use of flux. It survives in a good condition without much chemical alteration and is of great significance in archaeological metallurgy.
