Considering that gold from Kolar and Hutti gold mines is of light colour (being electrum, a native gold-silver alloy) and similar gold objects have been recovered from the Harappa sites, it has been inferred that the surface collection of gold nuggets had started by the Harappa period. The clustering of Neolithic sites around gold-mining areas and the recovery of gold ornaments from limited excavations of the Neolithic-Chalcolithic site of TEKKALAKOTA and Chalcolithic site of DAIMABAD confirm that the exploitation of these gold mines continued after the Harappa period.
