The Siamese of modern times is the main script of the Thai group of languages. But the earliest of the group is the Lao script used in n. Siam and Dt Amherst of Burma. Lu and Hkun characters derived from the Lao are used by the Shan tribes of Kentung state. The Ahom characters of the Ahom people in Dt Sibsagar Assam are also derived from Lao.
