In using this *Encyclopaedia* it should always be borne in mind that owing to the gap between its completion and publication it represents information available by the late 1970s. But so long as the finds published and the hypotheses proposed before the year 1980 continue to be an indispensable part of the baggage of the excavator and the theorist, this *Encyclopaedia* too should remain an indispensable work of reference. And for this, one would always cherish with special gratitude the memory of A. Ghosh, eminent archaeologist and prince among editors.
