Any account of archaeological cultures has to begin with the early phases of the Stone Ages, but here again comes in the question of terminology. When Stone Age research began in India, naturally the European terminology—Lower Palaeolithic, Middle Palaeolithic, Upper Palaeolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic—was adopted. Sankalia, 1956, pp. 35-52, used the terms Series I, II and III for the Lower and Middle Palaeolithic and Mesolithic (Microlithic) for his finds at Nevasa. These terms were widely used for other sites also. In the meantime Subbarao, 1958, proposed Early, Middle and Stone Ages for these three industries.
