In 1975-6 the Dept of Arch., Univ. of Calcutta, under the writer, explored in Dt Birbhum and parts of Dt Burdwan a large number of already known sites in the Mayurakshi-Ajay-Kunnur stretch and was also able to locate a few new ones. It has been noticed that in the upper stretch of the Mayurakshi and Bakreswar there is a decrease of Chalcolithic settlements, but there is a general increase in the c. and s. parts of Dt Birbhum. The surveyed area can be divided into three major zones: (1) Mayurakshi-Bakreswar-Sal; (2) Sal-Kopai-Ajay; and (3) Ajay-Kunnur-Damodar-Khari.
