*4.14.5 C. region.* C. India is more or less conterminous with the present-day Madhya Pradesh State and forms, as it were, a half-way house between the peninsular and n. parts of the Indian subcontinent. The available evidence for the Chalcolithic or village farming cultures in this area comes mainly from the w. part, known as the Malwa plateau, covered with fertile black soil [9.1]. The s. half forms part of the Narmada-Tapti drainage system, while the n. part is drained by the Chambal and Betwa rivers belonging to the Ganga-Yamuna system.
