Malwa culture: It is undoubtedly the best known of the three Chalcolithic cultures of c. India. NAVDATOLI on the s. bank of the Narmada and facing MAHESHWAR on the opposite bank, is the most important site of this culture, lying on a 25 m high terrace. From the fact that the occupation took place on the black soil it would seem that the area was covered with good vegetation prior to its colonization by the first inhabitants. The horizontal excavation conducted at this site has provided rich evidence on various aspects of the culture.
