In spite of its large size the NAVDATOLI settlement was not fortified. But a mud fortification wall and a moat were found at ERAN on the river Bina; this defence complex belongs to the middle phase of Malwa occupation for which there is an isolated ¹⁴C date of *c.* 2000 B.C. However doubts have been expressed about the antiquity of this complex; some have even ascribed it to the historical period.
