The sepulchral nature of these caves is evident from the fact that their contents comprise typical shapes of Black-and-red [11.15.3], ware, red and black wares associated with megaliths, sarcophagi [12.9], urns, etched carnelian and other beads, characteristic iron objects, ashes and bones. Some caves are marked by a stone circle on the ground above them. Sometimes they are part of a megalithic site which contains in addition one or more megaliths, such as ‘umbrella’ stones, ‘hood’ stones, dolmenoid cists and circle-bounded urn burials, as at PORKALAM (Sharma, 1956).
