(4) Pit circles: In this class of Megalithic monuments a pit is dug to a depth of 2 to 4 m and is encircled on the ground by stone circles. In some of the excavated ones at BRAHMAGIRI the rim of the pits is approached from the e. by a short shallow ramp which is closed by a non-functional door slab backed by lime, the whole exactly resembling the ramp, functional door and lime packing of the cists. It has been suggested that they were macerating pits of more than one corpse (Wheeler, in *AI*, 4, 1947-8, p. 197), but this has been doubted (Banerjee, 1956, pp. 27-8).
