As compared to JUNAPANI, the excavations at TAKALGHAT-KHAPA, MAHURJHARI and NAIKUND, all in the Vidarbha area of Maharashtra, proved more rewarding and significant. Of these the first two and the last were found to be both habitation and burial sites, while MAHURJHARI was only a burial site having as many as 70 stone cirlces with cairn filling. TAKALGHAT-KHAPA, excavated in 1968-9 by the Nagpur Univ., gave evidence of rectangular houses with mud-plastered walls and lime-coated floors with a bedding of rammed clay. The pottery, beads and metal objects were identical in the habitation area of TAKALGHAT and the burial area of KHAPA. The stone circles of KHAPA gave very fragmentary human bones along with bones of the horse and ornaments of copper sheet to be mounted on leather base and placed on the face and flanks of the horse.
