At many sites in Punjab, Haryana and w. Uttar Pradesh there was an earlier stratum marked by the occurrence of the PGW [11.14], going back to 800 B.C. if not earlier. The notable ones among such sites are ROPAR, HASTINĀPURA, ATRANJIKHERA, ALAMGIRPUR, ALLAHAPUR and KANAUJ. PURANA QILA in Delhi did not reveal any firm stratum of the PGW preceding the NBPW-yielding deposit, although sherds thereof had been picked up in a limited earlier excavation. At sites like ŚRĀVASTĪ and KAUŚĀMBĪ there does not as yet appear to be a clear-cut pre-NBPW horizon, though the antiquity of the latter site has been taken back to the beginning of the first millennium B.C. In e. Uttar Pradesh sites like RAJGHAT and PRAHLADPUR show a pre-NBPW horizon yielding the black-slipped ware [11.13] and a painted black-and-red ware [11.6.3], comparable with the material from the Bihar sites like CHIRAND. The NBPW shapes of the bowl and dish are a direct continuation of the corresponding PGW shapes.
