The evidence relating to the first stage is confined only to two excavated sites, viz. NÓH and BAIRAT, both in e. Rajasthan, wherein the overlap phase of the PGW [11.14] and NBPW [11.16] appears to represent the cultural traits of this span of time. At NOH some quantity of the black-and-red ware [11.16.3] was also found associated with these levels. No significant structures except a 3 m thick filling of mud (?), which was raised possibly as a safeguarding measure against floods, has been reported. Amongst the notable finds mention may be made of copper objects and iron implements including dishes and arrowheads, ivory hairpins, ear studs and beads of semiprecious stones, besides those of bone and terracotta, discs and wheels, hammer-stones, crucibles [16.4] and decorated figurines. A PGW sherd contained impression of cloth [16.16].
