During the period Gujarat, like other regions, witnessed the growth of towns, such as NAGARA and PRABHAS, though rural establishments are represented by such sites as TIMBARWA, BABEN, JOKHA, DHATVA, SATHOD, etc. New settlements seem to have been developing on rivers like the Tapti, Vishwamitri, Meshvo and Vatraka and in the plains. They indicate a linear pattern on the river banks but in the plains sites like SHAMALAJI, KARWAN, JOKHA, etc., indicate rectangular patterns. A thicker habitation than in the preceding periods is noticeable, the process being no doubt accelerated by the removal of the forest cover by iron-using agriculturists.
