Very few coins have been found in excavations. Only a few Gupta gold coins and a coin mould were discovered at NĀLANDĀ, though it may be surmised that Gupta gold and copper currency was in general use. Copper coins of Chandragupta II have been found in exploration at Checher mound, opposite Patna across the Ganga. Pāla coins are also rare. Only a few *drammas* of Vigrahapāla III were picked up from Jaimangal and Naula complex. It is apparent that external trade was on the decline.
