The w.most Lower Palaeolithic localities are known from the Mahi, Sabarmati, Karjan and Orsang valleys in Gujarat. From RAMPURA, on the Karjan, Acheulian implements were picked up in the 1941 expedition (Sankalia, 1946). The total kit contains pebble tools, handaxes, cleavers and flakes detached by Levallois technique. Similar remains were found at BAHADURPUR in the Orsang basin. A number of sites situated between Vasad and Jalampur on the banks of the Mahi have yielded Acheulian tools. The stratigraphy and typological position however are much clearer in the Sabarmati basin in n. Gujarat. The alluvial in the basin has been grouped within three stages, i.e. pre-Sabarmati, Sabarmati and post-Sabarmati. The Lower Palaeolithic man was contemporary with the Sabarmati stage, as is evident from the group of finds between WARSORA and GODA. Two groups of industries, viz. Abbevillian and Acheulian, were obtained from the area.
