(2) Antecedent stage: It must be admitted that in none of the areas have the details of the transition from the stage of food-gathering to that of food-producing and primary or settled village farming been worked out. Our understanding therefore of the origins and early spread and farming is still very insecure and fragmentary. The excavated sites reveal settlements which are later (excepting those at SANGANAKALLU, NAGARJUNAKONDA, KUCHAI and perhaps BURZAHOM) than would be pertinent to the transition itself.
