v1.c9.s7.9

It is well known that at Mohenjo-daro, between the lowest excavated depth and the natural soil, there is a gap of about 7 m, where open excavation is rendered impossible by subsoil water (Dales, 1965a, pp. 145-50). It has been thought, not unreasonably, that this ‘unplumbed depth’ may hold the key to the solution of the problem, but in the meantime we may consider some other aspects of the problem.
