The Harappa civilization [4.9], as Wheeler puts it, ‘like any other great revolution may best be visualized as a sudden offspring of opportunity and genius’ (Wheeler, 1966). The sudden growth of a highly urbanized civilization has remained a challenge to the archaeologists. Ghosh has said: ‘While death from unidentified causes is understandable, natural birth is an unnatural phenomenon’ (Ghosh, 1965). No doubt recent archaeological discoveries in the Indo-Pakistan subcontinent have given some clues to the origin of this culture but the exact genetic relationship is yet to be established.
