**Banahalli**, Dt Kolar. The site lies in the upper reaches of the Palar river and probably represents the largest Neolithic [4.6.9] Megalithic [4.17.8] settlement in s. India. The terrace marks an important open-air station of the Neolithic folk, using a variety of tools, viz. axes, axe-hammers, chisels, digging-stick weights, hoes, grinders, etc. Pale and burnished grey ware and a coarse red ware were also found. The Megalithic Black-and-red Ware [11.15.3] and iron objects were found in the upper part of the deposit. Overlooking the terrace are several rock-shelters [13] yielding a large quantity of Neolithic handmade pottery and stone implements. *IAR 1967-8*; *1972-3*.
