The area is studded with remains, of which eight monasteries with the usual plans have been excavated, but nothing earlier than Kushan coins has been found. The establishment continued to be in occupation till the 10th-11th century. A chapel not far away, forming part of a monastery, has an image of Buddha with the inscription of a local Kalacuri chief. Over 1 km to the e. is a huge *stūpa*, believed to have been erected over the site of Buddha’s cremation.
