1. Karkandhu is the ordinary word for ‘jujube,’ the tree (*Zizyphus jujuba*) and the fruit, from the Yajurveda Saṃhitās onwards.¹ The berry is red (*rohita*).² Compare Kuvala and Badara, which denote the fruit.
