Kāśāyaṇa is mentioned in the second Vamśa (list of teachers) of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad as a teacher, pupil of Sāyakāyana according to the Kāṇva (iv. 6, 2), of Saukarāyaṇa according to the Mādhyamdina recension (iv. 5, 27).
