Gavaya, the name of a species of ox (Bos gavaeus) occurs frequently from the Rigveda¹ onwards.² It is mentioned with Gaura and Mahiṣa in the Vājasaneyi Saṃhitā,³ where also a wild Gavaya is spoken of.⁴
