Jānaka, ‘descendant of Janaka,’ is the patronymic of Kratuvid in some MSS. of the Aitareya Brāhmaṇa.¹ In the Taittirīya Saṃhitā² the name appears instead as Kratujit Jānaka. Jānaka is also, according to some manuscripts of the Bṛhadāraṇyaka Upaniṣad,³ the patronymic of Āyasthūṇa, but is here no doubt a misreading of Jānaki.
