2. Parṇa denotes the tree Butea frondosa, later usually called Palāśa. It occurs in the Rigveda¹ in connexion with the Aśvattha, and with that tree as well as the Nyagrodha in the Atharvaveda,² which mentions both amulets³ and the cover of sacrificial dishes⁴ as made from its wood. Its use for the making of sacrificial implements like the ladle (juhū),⁵ or sacrificial posts,⁶ or the small ladle called sruva,⁷ is mentioned. The Taittirīya Saṃhitā⁸ ascribes its origin to the loss of a feather by the Gāyatrī when winning the Soma. The tree is also often mentioned elsewhere.⁹ Reference too is sometimes made to its bark (parṇa-valka).¹⁰
