Lopā is mentioned in the list of victims at the Aśvamedha (‘horse sacrifice’) in the Taittirīya Saṃhitā,¹ where Sāyaṇa explains it as a kind of bird, perhaps the carrion crow (*śmaśāna-śakuni*).
