v1.c12.3279

2. Koṇḍañña.—The name of a gotta. It was evidently common to both brahmans and khattiyas, for we find the brahman Aññāta-Koṇḍañña (q.v.) belonging to it, and elsewhere¹ it is mentioned as a khattiya-gotta. Among those mentioned as belonging to the Koṇḍañña-gotta are the Buddha Koṇḍañña (q.v.) (brahmin), Candakumāra² (khattiya), Sarabhaṅga³ (brahmin), and the three Buddhas Vipassī, Sikhī and Vessabhū, all khattiyas.⁴ In the Kacchapa Jātaka⁵ it is said that tortoises are of the Kassapa-gotta and monkeys of the Koṇḍañña-gotta, and that between these two classes there is intermarriage.
